Ebony light sets night aflame
And wakens the darkness to life again.
The eyes of granite mature to garnet
To seek the movement that stirs beneath
In the wake of the iridescent shadow
Aching with age, their withered wings unfurl
And they shiver and shake
To breathe the air once more.
All of them free, they slink skyward
As if one serpent
Slithering up the stony citadel,
Their crusty claws creeping into every crevice With shattering silence.
One by one they fall from the spire
And catch the wind to soar
Above the sleeping souls that reside in darkness.
Alive as flesh,
Released from the imprisonment of day
They wonder the veiled earth
Until the sun’s inferno arises
To seal their spirits in stone
